Foundation News

The Nicholas Ryan Over Foundation (NROF) is working with a National non-profit organization called Parent Heart Watch.( PHW) is a state by state network of parents dedicated to reduce the often disastrous effects of sudden cardiac arrest. Parent Heart Watch enables information sharing, support networks, and the formulation of nationwide programs that meet our mission and vision objective. Children that die from (SCA) are most often free of symptoms that would alert anyone of a pre-existing cardiac condition. According to the Pediatric Clinic of North America, SCA kills 7,000 to 10,000 children a year.

Skip and I attended the First Annual (PHW) conference held in Las Vegas January of 2006. More than 40 families from 30 states attended the inaugural leadership symposium in a first step to build a network of parents that can educate for policy changes across the nation. To date (PHW) has over 60 families in over 40 states working for their cause. Together we hope to make a difference!

The 2007 (PHW) leadership symposium will be held on January 12th to January 15th in Grapevine, Texas. Both Skip and I will attend. To learn more about (PHW) please visit

The Nicholas Ryan Over Foundation has established a program, South Central Pennsylvania Heart Safe Program (SCPHSP). A grant we received from the Metronics Foundation will help us to kick off the (SCPHSP) This program  includes Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and Lebanon Counties. The (SCPHSP) will reach out to these communities in the hopes they will see the importance of making their communities “heart safe.” This means placing AEDs into the community anywhere the public gathers. They need to be as accessible as a  fire extinquisher.  AEDs do save lives but you need the program also (CPR and AED training) as well as other guidelines to follow in order to have a successful program. The (NROF) offers free AED and CPR training. You may also purchase AEDs at a lower cost through our Foundation. For more information please e-mail Over226@aol.com

The Nicholas Ryan Over Foundation is working with a program Take It To Heart that was started by Rhonda Foster in loving memory of her daughter, Janna who passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition called Long QT Syndrome. This program offers  heart screenings to children in  8th to 12th grades. The 3rd Annual Heart Screening will be held on March 24, 2007 at Susquehanna Township High School Gymnasium. Pre-registration is required by February 25, 2007. For more information please e-mail Rhonda@takeittoheart.org

If your school has an AED does your AED program meet the criteria to be successful or “Make the Grade”?

  • Do you have enough AEDs on school property?

  • How many AEDs are publicly accessible?

  • Is everyone in the school aware of what an AED is and the location?

  • Do you have an emergency plan in effect if someone suffers a SCA?

  • Do you hold AED drills on a regular basis?

If your recent AED program does not already meet this criteria then now is the time to do so.
